Zee5 has formed a partnership with Amagi Media Labs to introduce Free Ad-Supported Streaming Television (FAST) channels in India. The service, set to launch in August, will allow viewers to access content for free, supported by advertisements. This marks a significant addition to Zee5’s existing ad-free subscription revenue model, as it seeks to tap into a growing sector that emulates the traditional television viewing experience. The FAST market is projected to expand at an annual growth rate of 12.67% between 2025 and 2030.

Zee5 to Launch FAST Channels

In a recent press release, Zee5 announced its intention to utilize technology from Amagi Media Labs for the forthcoming FAST channels, enhancing its Connected TV service. The streaming platform plans to offer a diverse array of content, including movies and series across genres like comedy, drama, and horror, accessible on smart TVs and connected devices. Zee5 views this initiative as a strategic opportunity to bolster its foothold within the rapidly evolving connected TV landscape.

What are FAST Channels?

FAST services provide a free viewing experience supported by advertising revenue, similar to traditional television channels. Viewers can access multiple TV channels at no charge, with the understanding that they will watch advertisements in exchange. Recently, FAST channels have surged in popularity as viewers shift towards these options. Essentially, FAST services and conventional linear TV function in parallel, with viewers selecting preferred channels rather than specific programs.

The market for FAST channel services is estimated to reach $194.71 million (around Rs. 1,671 crore) by 2025, according to Statista. Additionally, the overall sector is expected to grow at an annual rate of 12.67% over the next five years (2025-2030). In the United States, the market revenue from FAST channels is projected to be approximately $5.78 billion (about Rs. 49,602 crore) by 2025. By 2030, India is anticipated to have around 154.3 million FAST subscribers.

Given these statistics, Zee5 is entering the FAST channel landscape at a promising moment, amidst expectations of substantial market growth. However, it will face competition from established players like The Roku Channel and Plex, both of which boast considerable market presence. Plex reports having over 25 million subscribers worldwide, though it does not disclose data on subscribers by country.
