YouTube has announced the introduction of a range of artificial intelligence-driven features designed for creators, marking the latest initiative by its parent company, Alphabet, to integrate generative AI technology—capable of producing text, images, music, and other media through simple inputs—into its primary products and services.

Among the innovative tools unveiled on Thursday is Dream Screen, a feature that employs generative AI to enhance short-form videos, known as Shorts, by incorporating video or image backgrounds. Additionally, YouTube rolled out new AI-enabled production tools to streamline the editing process for both short and long-form content on its platform.

“We are excited to introduce a suite of products and features that will empower creators to expand their creative horizons,” said Toni Reid, YouTube’s vice president for community products, in a blog post accompanying the announcement. This follows a previous disclosure in March regarding the development of such tools.

Amid increasing pressure to demonstrate tangible outcomes and practical uses for its generative AI offerings, Google faces scrutiny, especially as competitors like OpenAI and Microsoft continue to gain traction in the AI space. The popularity of OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Microsoft’s newly enhanced Bing chatbot—backed by a significant investment of $13 billion (approximately ₹1,08,100 crore)—has highlighted concerns regarding Google’s pace in delivering fully functional products.

In recent months, Google has launched Bard, its own ChatGPT alternative, along with a series of updates. The company has also infused experimental generative AI features into essential services, including its flagship search engine, via an initiative known as the “search generative experience.” This feature generates comprehensive summaries based on information retrieved from the internet in response to user inquiries.

YouTube’s announcement coincides with escalating competition against TikTok and Instagram Reels for dominance in the short-form video sector. The platform reports over 70 billion daily views on Shorts, and the new generative AI features aim to attract a wider audience and bolster creator engagement as it seeks an advantage over its competitors.

Additionally, YouTube introduced YouTube Create, a mobile application designed to simplify video production for creators. This app boasts AI-driven features, including editing and trimming, automatic captioning, voiceover support, and access to a selection of filters and royalty-free music. Currently in beta testing on Android in select markets, the app will be free to users.

Beyond production tools, YouTube plans to enhance creator experiences by offering AI-generated insights, automatic video dubbing assistance, and tools for discovering music and soundtracks suitable for their content.
