YouTube is set to launch its new artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) age estimation tool in the near future. First revealed in July, this innovative feature aims to more accurately assess the actual age of users by analyzing various activity metrics. The platform emphasizes that this tool will enhance protections for minors who may have inaccurately reported their date of birth when registering for an account. Should the tool identify an account as belonging to an individual under the age of 18, YouTube will implement content restrictions and activate digital wellbeing features to safeguard younger users.

YouTube’s Age Estimation Model Is Rolling Out Starting August 13

YouTube announced on its support page that the age estimation model will begin rolling out in the United States on August 13. Unlike traditional methods that rely on the birth date provided by users, this AI/ML model employs different signals to evaluate a user’s actual age.

In a recent blog post, YouTube highlighted its commitment to ensuring that teenagers and children receive appropriate treatment while using the service. The age estimation tool gathers data from various sources, including the types of searches conducted on YouTube, the categories of videos viewed, and the longevity of user accounts.

If a user is determined to be under 18, YouTube plans to disable personalized advertising, activate digital wellbeing features, and enforce stricter controls on video recommendations, particularly to reduce the exposure of certain content types. The company has indicated that the tool may also expand to other regions based on initial results.

While YouTube recognizes the potential for inaccuracies in its AI system, they have provided a solution for users whose accounts may be mistakenly classified as belonging to teens. Users can verify their age by submitting a government-issued ID, uploading a verification selfie, or using a credit card for validation.

This tool could effectively shield minor users from harmful content and limit their exposure to data collection for advertising purposes. However, there are concerns that parents who share content aimed at children on their accounts might face incorrect flagging. Once flagged, users will need to undergo age verification, a process that may raise privacy concerns given the intrusive nature of the current options available.
