YouTube has unveiled a new artificial intelligence feature for its creators on Thursday. The video streaming platform announced the integration of Google’s Veo 2 AI model with its Dream Screen feature, which now enables users to create standalone AI-generated videos. This enhancement allows creators to access footage that may be hard to find or to visualize their imaginative concepts. Previously, the Dream Screen feature only permitted users to incorporate video backgrounds generated by AI.

YouTube Shorts Now Allows Users to Generate AI Videos

In a recent blog post, YouTube emphasized the integration of Google DeepMind’s latest video generation model, Veo 2, with the Dream Screen feature. This addition enables users to create original videos specifically for the Shorts format, a feature introduced by the company in 2020 for short-form vertical videos.

The platform stated that this enhancement is designed to help creators source footage that may not be readily accessible. The tool functions as a text-to-video generator, allowing users to describe what they want, after which the Veo 2 AI model will produce the requested content.

Introduced in December 2024 as the successor to the original Veo model, Veo 2 made notable advancements in video detail and realism. DeepMind reported that the latest model excels in cinematography, demonstrating a heightened understanding of genres, lens types, cinematic effects, and camera movements.

To use Veo 2 for video generation, users must open the Shorts camera, select Add to access the media picker, and then tap Create at the top. In doing so, they will encounter a text field for entering their prompt. After the prompt is submitted, users can select a video style, click Create video, and decide on the desired length.

In an effort to combat the potential for deepfakes, YouTube will apply SynthID watermarks to all AI-generated video clips. However, it is important to note that this video generation feature is currently accessible only in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the United States.
