Instagram has officially revealed that it is in the process of testing a new ‘dislike’ button aimed at allowing users to downvote comments they find offensive or irrelevant. This feature will be made available on both Feed posts and Reels. While the platform will not disclose the total number of dislikes, these will influence the ranking of comments. Currently, access to the dislike button is limited to a select group of users, and there is no set timeline for a broader rollout.
Instagram Introduces Dislike Button for User Comments
Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, shared the news through a post on Threads, indicating that this new tool will enable users to privately express their dissatisfaction with comments on posts and Reels. “This gives people a private way to signal that they don’t feel good about that particular comment,” he stated.
The dislike count will remain hidden, ensuring that users are unaware if their comments have received dislikes. However, Mosseri mentioned that the feature could eventually be used to adjust the ranking of comments, positioning those that receive more dislikes lower in the thread.
“Our hope is that this might help make comments more friendly on Instagram,” Mosseri added. The dislike button can be found adjacent to comments on both posts and Reels, with a number of users already discovering and using the feature on the platform.
The function draws parallels to the downvote feature available on Reddit. YouTube previously offered a similar option for videos but ceased displaying the dislike count in 2021.
In addition to the dislike button, Instagram is reportedly working on introducing Community Notes and an Edits app, which is targeted at enhancing high-quality video capture and streamlining the editing experience.
