The Xbox app is now accessible on select LG smart televisions, allowing users with compatible models to stream games directly from the cloud, eliminating the need for an Xbox console. Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscribers across more than 25 countries can now enjoy games from their library on their TV using a Bluetooth controller. This development follows last year’s introduction of Xbox Cloud Gaming support for the Amazon Fire TV Stick.
Cloud Gaming on LG Smart TVs
On Wednesday, Microsoft announced in a post on Xbox Wire that the Xbox app is rolling out to 2022 LG OLED TVs, select 2023 LG smart TVs, and newer models, along with smart monitors running webOS 24 or later. Support for the StanbyME screen is also expected soon.
The app allows Game Pass Ultimate members to stream a variety of games directly on supported LG TVs, including titles from their personal library and those available via the Game Pass service. Microsoft had previously enhanced its Xbox Cloud Gaming offerings in November by incorporating support for select purchased games.
Members of Game Pass who have compatible LG TVs can now stream new first-party Xbox releases like Avowed and South of Midnight without the need for an Xbox console. Additionally, players can utilize the “stream your own game” feature to stream the newly launched Assassin’s Creed Shadows on their LG TV via the Xbox app.
For users to access Xbox Cloud Gaming on an LG TV, they will need a suitable television, an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate membership, and a Bluetooth controller, which can be either the Xbox Wireless Controller or the DualSense controller. Eligible users can easily navigate to the LG Gaming Portal on their TVs to download the Xbox app, sign in with their Microsoft account, connect their controller, and begin playing.
Besides LG TVs, the Xbox app also provides Xbox Cloud Gaming on platforms such as Fire TV Stick, Android devices, iOS, iPadOS, PC (both Windows and Mac), Meta Quest headsets, and Samsung smart TVs.
Earlier this month, Microsoft also launched the “stream your own game” service for its Xbox Series S/X consoles.
