The social media platform X, previously known as Twitter, is set to roll out an early version of video and audio calling for a select group of users, announced CEO Elon Musk, who aims to transform X into an “everything app.”
Musk highlighted this development in a post that provided instructions for users to activate the calling feature, referring to it as an “Early version of video & audio calling on X.”
This addition is part of an ongoing revision of the platform, which has seen multiple new features and alterations since Musk took ownership nearly one year ago.
Following the rebranding from Twitter to X, Musk has expressed his vision of evolving the platform into a super-app that encompasses messaging, social networking, and even peer-to-peer transactions.
Earlier this month, X also announced its plans to initiate a new subscription model incorporating a $1 (approximately Rs. 83) annual fee for accessing basic functionalities.
The subscription, termed “Not A Bot,” will implement charges for actions such as likes, reposts, quoting other accounts’ posts, and bookmarking posts on the web interface.
X explained that the motivation behind this subscription model is to reduce the prevalence of bots and spammers, noting that fees will differ across countries according to local exchange rates.
The new model will initially be trialed in New Zealand and the Philippines.
During this testing phase, current users will not be impacted, while new users who choose not to subscribe will have access limited to merely viewing and reading posts, watching videos, and following accounts.
