X, the social media platform founded by Elon Musk, is set to introduce a new feature that will provide users with AI-generated summaries of news events directly within the app, utilizing the capabilities of xAI’s chatbot, Grok.
The news summaries will be constructed from tweets posted by users, rather than being based on external news articles. This feature, dubbed “Stories,” will be exclusive to premium subscribers as announced by the company on Friday. While it currently does not reference any news organizations, Musk indicated in an interview with the tech newsletter Big Technology that improvements in citation practices are forthcoming.
“As more information becomes available, the news summary will update to include that information,” Musk informed Big Technology, which previously reported on the new feature. Notably, Grok is associated with xAI, an AI venture co-founded by Musk, and is trained on content sourced from X.
Previously, X, known as Twitter, offered a feature named Moments, which provided curated news summaries moderated by human editors. This service was discontinued shortly after Musk acquired the platform in late 2022.
In other news, Musk recently postponed a planned trip to India that was set to include discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He cited significant commitments at Tesla as the reason for the delay.
“Unfortunately, very heavy Tesla obligations require that the visit to India be delayed, but I do very much look forward to visiting later this year,” Musk stated in a post on X. He was originally slated to visit on April 21 and 22 to announce Tesla’s plans for entering the Indian market.
