X, the microblogging platform previously known as Twitter and now owned by Elon Musk, has been steadily rolling out a variety of new features since the billionaire’s acquisition in 2022. The platform is reportedly working on a new capability that would allow users to edit direct messages (DMs), although details regarding the timeline for this release remain unconfirmed.

Recently, X has also begun developing a feature that would enable users to disable links in their replies to posts, according to various reports.

X Exploring Editing Functionality for Direct Messages

An employee from X, Enrique (@enriquebrgn), indicated that the company is in the process of implementing a feature that allows users to edit their DMs. This functionality is anticipated to operate similarly to message-editing options available on other platforms such as WhatsApp and Instagram, which allow users to modify sent messages within a designated timeframe.

In response to a user’s inquiry about the potential for editing replies as well, the employee mentioned “baby steps.” This claim was further supported by a comment from Elon Musk on the thread.

Currently, while X permits editing of posts and comments, this feature is exclusively available to X Premium subscribers. Standard direct messages, once sent, remain uneditable. It is still uncertain whether the new editing function for DMs will also require a premium subscription or if it will be accessible to all users.

If fully realized, the ability to edit DMs could significantly enhance the user experience, allowing individuals to correct inadvertent typing mistakes that often occur.

Additional Features in the Pipeline

Beyond the potential for editing DMs, X is also reportedly exploring other enhancements, including the introduction of a ‘Dislike’ button for iOS users, which would enable them to downvote posts. This feature appears to have been revealed through code references in the X app, with indications of a heartbroken emoji-style icon designated for dislikes. Speculation suggests that this downvoting feature could extend to replies as well, mirroring systems used by platforms like Reddit.
