The social media platform X, previously known as Twitter, is reportedly conducting tests on a free version of its native artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot, Grok. Users began sharing their experiences on Sunday, indicating that some had gained access to Grok without needing a paid subscription. However, this free access appears to come with certain limitations and may only be available in select regions. This development follows the recent launch of the Grok API by xAI, along with various incentives for developers.
X Said to Be Testing Free Version of Grok
A report by TechCrunch has confirmed that the free version of Grok is currently being trialed in New Zealand, although there may be additional regions where access is granted. Staff members from Gadgets 360 attempted to verify these testing claims but were unable to confirm their validity. Notably, it appears that the AI bot is not available for users in India. The free version of Grok is also expected to undergo a branding change, replacing its existing word logo with a new socket-like design.
One user shared detailed information about the limitations associated with the free tier. According to their comments, Grok will only be accessible to accounts that are at least seven days old and have a linked phone number.
Under the current setup, non-subscribers can ask up to 10 Grok 2 questions every two hours and can engage with 20 Grok 2 mini questions in the same timeframe. Furthermore, the free version allows for the analysis of up to three images each day.
In a separate initiative, xAI launched the Grok API last week, offering developers incentives to engage with the new tool. These incentives include free monthly credits valued at $25 (approximately Rs. 2,100) until the end of the year. Developers who have already purchased prepaid credits for the API will also receive an equivalent monthly credit until the conclusion of 2024.
