The social media platform X, previously known as Twitter, is reportedly preparing to introduce passkeys support for its Android application. This new feature, which offers users a password-free login method, was first launched for iOS devices in January and is now in beta testing for Android users. The rollout is anticipated to take place globally in the near future.

According to a report from AssembleDebug, the passkeys feature has been identified in recent code strings within the latest beta version of the app (version 10.32.0-beta) and in the beta app itself. This initiative will augment existing security measures, including two-factor authentication (2FA) and password reset protection. Users can view the new feature in-app, as indicated by included images.

A line of code indicates a new setting for enabling passkeys, described as a feature that may be linked to biometric security. Once the feature is publicly released, it is expected to be found under Settings and privacy > Security and account access > Security, located at the bottom of the menu under Additional password protection.

While passkeys have already been available to iOS users since January, no specific timeline has been provided for Android users. However, indications from the latest beta release suggest that the feature’s global launch may be imminent. The scheduled release date remains unconfirmed.

As a modern alternative to traditional passwords, passkeys have gained traction as a solution to many of the difficulties associated with conventional password usage. With traditional passwords vulnerable to hacking and often difficult to memorize, passkeys offer a more secure approach that can utilize several methods, such as biometric recognition (including Face ID and fingerprint scanning), PINs, authenticator apps, or even alternative devices. Overall, biometric security is viewed as a more robust option when compared to standard passwords.
