WhatsApp has initiated testing for a new feature that enables users to edit previously sent messages in the latest beta version of its Web application. The messaging platform, owned by Meta, was earlier observed developing a notification that alerts users when a message has been altered. This functionality is now available to select beta testers, though editing a message can only be done within a limited timeframe.
The new feature is included in version 2.2319.9 of WhatsApp Web, as noted by the feature-tracking site WABetaInfo. Users utilizing this version will find the option to Edit message in the contextual menu accessed via a right-click. Currently, this editing capability is restricted to text messages.
Users will have a 15-minute window to amend their messages following delivery, as outlined by the feature tracker. Multiple edits can be made to a message, and this functionality is supported in both individual and group chats, WABetaInfo confirmed.
It is notable that Apple introduced a similar feature in its Messages app with the iOS 16 launch last year, allowing users to edit sent messages within 15 minutes, although each text can only be modified up to five times.
Currently, the message editing capability is exclusive to the latest beta version of WhatsApp Web; however, reports suggest that this feature may soon be available in beta versions of WhatsApp for both Android and iOS. WABetaInfo has also indicated that an alert about message edits has been observed in WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.23.10.10, hinting that final preparations for broader testing might be underway.
Recently, WhatsApp has launched several features including single-vote polls, enhanced search capabilities for polls in chats, and notifications that alert users when group members participate in a poll. Additionally, users can now forward media along with existing captions or omit them while transferring messages, and they also have the ability to add captions to documents shared through the app.
