WhatsApp has commenced beta testing of an updated user interface on Android, following months of speculation about a redesigned version of the widely used messaging application. The new interface replaces the traditional green top bar with a cleaner white variant, seen in both the main chat list and within individual conversations. This redesign adheres to Google’s Material Design 3 principles and enhances the aesthetics of the app’s dark theme. Additionally, the latest beta update introduces new ‘outline’ icons for various buttons within the application.

A staff member at Gadgets 360 was among the first to receive the refreshed interface through the beta version — WhatsApp beta for Android 2.23.21.12. Testers who install this update will notice the modified interface featuring a white top bar with the WhatsApp text in green, contrasting with the current stable version, which displays the text in white on a deep green background. When the dark theme is activated, the top bar transitions to black with the text appearing in white.whatsapp new interface redesign gadgets360 whatsapp

In addition to these changes, WhatsApp has adjusted the shade of the green accents used throughout the app, making elements like the floating action button (FAB) appear brighter, especially in dark mode.

The update also revamps the icons for voice and video calls in individual chats and the camera icon in the main chat list, replacing the solid designs with outlined versions of existing icons. Feature trackers had noted these new outline icons in a previous beta version, 2.23.20.10 of WhatsApp for Android.

Moreover, WhatsApp is also planning to refresh the color palette for its iOS application alongside the introduction of the new outline icons. These design changes were recently discovered in WhatsApp beta for iOS 23.19.1.72. Unlike the Android version, the stable iOS app does not feature a green top bar.

While iOS beta testers have yet to access the new interface, both platforms are expected to soon include new chat filters—such as All, Unread, Contacts, and Groups—aimed at simplifying chat management. These filters, together with the updated interface, are anticipated to be rolled out to users on the stable channel in the upcoming months.
