WhatsApp is poised to introduce a new customization feature for iOS users. A feature tracker indicates that the messaging app has begun rolling out a chat theme capability, allowing users to choose from a variety of chat colors and wallpapers, thereby enhancing their messaging experience. This functionality was first noticed back in August when the Meta-owned platform was reportedly still refining it. Certain users have already encountered this feature on their devices, although it is currently available in a limited release, with wider availability expected in the following weeks.
WhatsApp Might Be Rolling Out Chat Theme to iOS Users
According to the WhatsApp feature tracker WABetaInfo, the chat theme feature appeared in the latest WhatsApp for iOS 24.20.71 update listed on the App Store. Although most users have not experienced any significant changes, the feature tracker suggests that some individuals have already accessed the new chat theme interface, with a screenshot of the feature also being circulated.
The screenshot reveals that the new chat theme customization option allows users to modify two key elements: chat color and chat wallpaper. The chat color adjustments include the bubble colors, the area beneath the text input field, and the header space. Meanwhile, the chat wallpaper pertains to the background where text messages are displayed.
The feature tracker mentioned that users can choose from 20 different chat color options, featuring a range of popular pastel hues, and 22 unique wallpapers with various designs and patterns. iOS users have the flexibility to apply a single chat theme across all conversations or select specific themes for individual contacts. It remains unclear if users will be able to upload external wallpapers.
Additionally, the feature tracker noted that, unlike Instagram direct messages, changes made to the chat theme will not be visible to the other party in a conversation. This means that the customization is purely for the device of the user, allowing individuals to personalize their chat experience without affecting others.
