WhatsApp is currently developing a new feature called the ‘Channel Notifier’, which is part of the rollout of version 2.23.12.20. This feature is now available to users participating in the Google Play Beta Program and is expected to be accessible to a broader audience in the weeks to come. The Channel Notifier will alert users when the Channels feature becomes available in their respective regions.
Recently, Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp, launched the ‘Channels’ feature that allows users to follow organizations for broadcast messages regarding updates and developments. Meta describes this feature as “a simple, reliable, and private way to receive important updates from people and organizations, right within WhatsApp.” Presently, the Channels feature is limited to users in Singapore and Colombia.
According to a report by WABetaInfo, WhatsApp’s new notification feature will inform users in countries outside of Singapore and Colombia when Channels will be launched in their area. Users who attempt to access the Channels feature in these regions will receive a pop-up message, offering the option to be notified when the feature becomes available.
Meta has indicated that the Channels feature has been a long-standing request from users, prompting the company to ensure that users are informed about its imminent availability on the platform.
Initially, organizations such as the International Rescue Committee, the World Health Organisation, and notable sports clubs like FC Barcelona and Manchester City will participate in WhatsApp’s Channels feature. The tech giant based in Silicon Valley plans to gradually introduce Channels to more users over the coming months.
