WhatsApp is currently developing a new feature for its Android application that will enable users to add and filter their favorite chats for improved accessibility. This feature is in the testing phase and is being gradually made available to participants of the Google Play Beta Program. Once it becomes available in beta, users will have the opportunity to explore and provide feedback on this functionality. Additionally, WhatsApp is also testing filters for unread messages and groups to highlight specific conversations.
WhatsApp Initiates Beta Testing for a Favourites Filter
Feature tracker WABetaInfo has identified this new functionality in the WhatsApp beta version 2.24.12.7 for Android. It allows users to categorize their favorite chats through a fresh filter, which is expected to benefit individuals inundated with numerous messages, making it easier to locate frequent contacts. While WhatsApp already offers a chat pinning feature, it is limited to just three pinned chats at a time.
The publication shared a screenshot depicting the new feature, which showcases four filters at the top of the screen beneath the WhatsApp logo. In addition to the previously available All, Unread, and Groups filters, the new Favourites filter is prominently featured.
How the WhatsApp Favourites Chat Filter Functions
The feature description emphasizes its purpose: “Make it easy to find the people and groups that matter most across WhatsApp.” Users will find an “Add to Favourites” option at the bottom, allowing them to manually include contacts in this preferred list.
According to WABetaInfo, users will also have the ability to remove and rearrange chats according to their preferences. Since this feature is being gradually rolled out in beta, it may not be immediately available to all testers, but it is expected to be accessible in the coming days.
WhatsApp Extends Voice Message Duration for Beta Users
In other developments, WhatsApp has recently enhanced the time limit for voice messages in Status updates. Previously capped at 30 seconds, users can now upload voice messages lasting up to one minute.
This change has been implemented for both Android and iOS versions of the app. Moreover, WhatsApp is reportedly exploring an Imagine shortcut to facilitate users in generating AI-driven images, a feature powered by Meta AI.
