WhatsApp has recently broadened the distribution of its Meta AI chatbots in selected regions such as India and the United States, signaling ongoing advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) features for the platform. Reports indicate that the messaging application is in the midst of developing a new feature called ‘Imagine Me,’ which will enable users to create AI-generated images of themselves. This development has been observed in the latest beta release of WhatsApp for Android, now accessible through the Google Play Beta program.
Feature tracker WABetaInfo has identified the potential new feature that allows users to generate their own images using Meta AI. Upon opting into this feature, users may be prompted to upload a series of reference selfies.
WABetaInfo highlighted that references to the forthcoming AI-driven ‘Imagine Me’ feature were discovered in the WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.24.14.13, part of the Google Play Beta program. However, the feature is still under development and is not yet functional in the installed beta version on Android devices.
Overview of the ‘Imagine Me’ Feature
The report included a screenshot showcasing the proposed functionality, providing an insight into how the feature might appear once launched. After users provide a set of photos, the Meta AI chatbot will generate new images based on those uploads.
Users can request an AI-generated image by typing “Imagine me” in the Meta AI chat window, or by using “@Meta AI imagine me” in other chat conversations.
According to the captured screenshot, users will have the option to choose various backgrounds and locations ranging from forest settings to outer space, enhancing the possibility for personalized stickers. Users may also be able to delete their uploaded selfies at any time through their settings, per WABetaInfo’s findings.
This new personalized AI image-generating feature is expected to be optional, requiring manual activation in user settings. Its official availability is anticipated for a future update, according to the feature tracker.
Meta AI, which serves as the company’s alternative to ChatGPT, began its rollout in India last month. Besides WhatsApp, this chatbot, powered by the proprietary Llama 3 large language model (LLM), is also available on Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger.
