The HD video sharing feature on WhatsApp has started rolling out for Android users, following the recent introduction of high-resolution image support on the Meta-owned messaging platform. Previously, all videos shared on WhatsApp underwent compression, leading to reduced resolution for recipients. While this practice facilitated quicker file transfers and minimized data usage, users can now opt to send select videos in higher quality.
With the latest WhatsApp for Android update, version 2.23.17.74, which began on Thursday, users will notice an HD icon at the top of the screen while selecting videos to share. By toggling this option, users can send videos in 720p resolution instead of the usual 480p, which is the standard default option.
The feature has already been observed on devices of staff members at Gadgets 360 following the update to the newest version. There has yet to be an announcement regarding the availability of this feature for the stable version of WhatsApp on iOS, where it is currently undergoing beta testing.
It is important to remember that users must toggle the HD option each time they wish to send a video in higher quality. By default, the app will continue to send videos in the standard resolution of 480p, which is considered low in 2023 as many smartphones now boast full-HD and quad-HD displays. This default setting has likely been implemented to manage the storage space on users’ devices more effectively.
To send a high-resolution video on WhatsApp after updating to the latest Android version, follow these steps. Please note that availability may vary for different users.
