WhatsApp is set to introduce support for third-party messaging, enabling users to send and receive messages across different platforms. This update was announced by Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp, last week. The move towards interoperability comes in response to the enforcement of the European Union’s Digital Markets Act (DMA) in 2022. Although Meta initially sought an extension, citing challenges associated with maintaining end-to-end encryption, the company has now confirmed that it has resolved these issues and is ready to implement the new feature.

WhatsApp to Introduce Third-Party Chats

In a recent post on their newsroom, Meta revealed that additional development time was required to ensure the smooth operation of the interoperable feature. This will enable communication between users on different messaging applications and is being developed alongside Messenger, Facebook’s integrated messaging app. Meta emphasizes its commitment to preserving user privacy and security in this new integration.

The social media company has also previewed how the feature will function once deployed. WhatsApp plans to introduce new notifications that will inform users about third-party chat options. Users will receive reminders each time a new messaging app joins the platform.

Furthermore, WhatsApp is working on an onboarding process that will guide users in activating third-party chats. This flow will assist users in selecting which external apps they wish to receive messages from, in addition to managing their messaging preferences.

Users will have the flexibility to separate third-party chats from their primary inbox or to integrate them all into a combined interface. For those who choose separation, messages can be directed to a dedicated folder.

Additionally, WhatsApp users will continue to enjoy various app-specific features, including message reactions, direct replies, typing indicators, and read receipts. Plans for future enhancements in 2027 include group creation and voice and video calling capabilities.

Meta stated it is working closely with third-party messaging services to ensure a secure experience for WhatsApp users.
