WhatsApp for Android is set to introduce a new feature enhancing its in-app artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot, Meta AI. According to a feature tracker focused on WhatsApp, the messaging service is developing a Voice Mode that will enable users to engage in two-way conversations with the chatbot. This functionality is expected to leverage the AI’s conversational capabilities to effectively respond to user inquiries. The feature was originally noted last month, and the user interface is now reportedly visible.
A recent update from WABetaInfo reveals that the Voice Mode for Meta AI was identified in the beta version of WhatsApp for Android, specifically in version 2.24.18.18. However, this feature is not currently accessible within the beta app for those enrolled in the Google Beta Programme.
The feature tracker shared a screenshot showcasing the interface for Meta AI’s Voice Mode. In the image, users can see a Meta AI button located above the New Chat icon, which can be long-pressed to activate the voice functionality. Additionally, the hands-free mode can reportedly be engaged by tapping a waveform icon next to the text entry field in the Meta AI chat.
To activate the feature, users might simply tap on the waveform icon. Another screenshot revealed a bottom sheet displaying “Meta AI” at the top, featuring a circular aura icon likely representing the voice mode, along with icons for speaker, mute, and a disconnect feature related to the voice capability.
Earlier reports indicated that users could choose from ten distinct voices for the feature. Although the exact differences among these voices remain unclear, it is anticipated that they may include variations in accent, tone, and gender. Information on potential multi-language support is yet to be confirmed.
While platforms such as OpenAI and Google currently provide two-way communication features via ChatGPT Voice Mode and Gemini Live, these services are exclusively available to paid subscribers. If WhatsApp successfully launches this hands-free feature, it could pave the way for the company to be the first to offer it at no cost.
