WhatsApp is reportedly developing a new feature aimed at enhancing user experience by allowing the addition of music to Status updates. The Meta-owned messaging platform is currently testing this functionality with select beta users on both Android and iOS devices. This move aligns with features available on Instagram, another of Meta’s applications, which already permits users to incorporate music into their Stories, akin to WhatsApp’s Status updates.
New Music Feature for WhatsApp Status on Android and iOS
According to feature tracker WABetaInfo, the new capability for Android users allows them to include music in their Status updates. This feature is being tested with users who have installed the WhatsApp beta version 2.25.2.5. The rollout for additional Android users is anticipated to follow.
In a similar vein, WABetaInfo notes that the WhatsApp beta version 25.1.10.73 for iOS users also features this music integration. Selected participants in the WhatsApp iOS beta program can utilize this feature after updating to the latest testing version.
For both Android and iOS, a new music button will be available next to the drawing, text, and other editing tools in the Status update section. Users will have the ability to search for specific songs or artists through this new option.
Upon choosing a track, users can select the portion of the song they wish to include. For image-based Status updates, the music can play for a maximum of 15 seconds, while the music length for video updates is determined by the video’s duration.
The introduction of music into WhatsApp Status updates is expected to enhance viewer engagement and create a more interactive experience. Reports indicate that information about the playing song will be featured alongside the shared content, similar to functionalities on Instagram.
Moreover, viewers who access the Status update will have the capability to connect with the artist’s Instagram profile through the music used. This feature is designed to bolster the discovery of musical artists and foster direct interaction within the WhatsApp platform.
Beta testers can download the WhatsApp beta version 2.25.2.5 for Android from the Google Play Store, and the WhatsApp beta version 25.1.10.73 for iOS can be accessed via the TestFlight app.
