Instagram is implementing a series of profile updates that may not be well-received by all users. The platform, owned by Meta, has begun to transition from square grids to vertical grids, a change that initiated in August 2024 and is now being made available to its entire user base. This shift could impact how users curate their profiles, particularly those who have crafted unique visual layouts with multiple grid arrangements. In addition, users will soon be able to customize their post thumbnails and reorder their profile grids. Furthermore, the time limit for Reels has been expanded from 90 seconds to up to three minutes.

Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, shared the news about the profile changes in a recent post. He indicated that the vertical grid format replaces the existing 1:1 aspect ratio with a 4:3 ratio. While he noted that reactions to the update have been “both positive and quite negative,” Mosseri also outlined several new features designed to assist users in adapting to the changes.

“The majority of photos and videos uploaded to Instagram are vertical, and rectangular grids showcase these visuals more effectively,” he explained, emphasizing that the new format aims to create a “simpler, cleaner place.”

Mosseri mentioned that future updates will provide users with more options to adjust and arrange their profile grids aesthetically. Instagram is also enhancing customization options for post thumbnails, enabling users to better control how their profiles appear.

In another notable change, Instagram plans to relocate Story Highlights to the profile grid, positioning them between the bio section and the grid as circular icons. Mosseri described the current layout as “visually complicated,” noting that it disrupts the grid’s appearance. Additionally, the platform is exploring a feature that would permit users to reorder their grids and post directly to the profile grid, with these posts remaining unseen on the feed.

“Our strategy may evolve over the coming months, but I hope that sharing our plans early will prevent further unexpected changes,” Mosseri stated.

Instagram Reels Extended to Three Minutes

In a separate announcement, Mosseri revealed that users can now upload Reels with a duration of up to three minutes. Previously, the maximum length permitted was 90 seconds. This extension aligns Instagram more closely with other platforms focused on vertical video content, such as TikTok and YouTube.

TikTok introduced three-minute video capabilities in July 2021, while YouTube extended its Shorts duration in October 2024. At the time of this report, Gadgets 360 had yet to verify the availability of three-minute Reels on both Android and iOS systems.
