WhatsApp is reportedly in the process of developing a new feature for its iOS application that will enable users to incorporate their Instagram profile links into their accounts. According to information from a well-known feature tracker, this addition is designed to help users display their social media profiles in one convenient location, making it easier for their contacts to connect with them. The feature has been identified in the latest beta version of the iOS app but remains under development, with beta testers currently unable to access it.
WhatsApp Might Allow Users to Integrate Instagram Links
As highlighted by the feature tracker WABetaInfo, the messaging service is looking to introduce functionality that allows users to add their Instagram profile links. This was discovered in the WhatsApp for iOS beta version 25.2.10.72, which is available through the TestFlight beta program. However, the feature is not yet active in this iteration of the app.
According to a screenshot shared by WABetaInfo, the new feature will be integrated into the Links section of the user’s profile interface. In this section, a new option called Add Links will be available, allowing users to input their Instagram username by pressing a plus icon.
The tracker mentioned that there is currently no requirement for users to verify the profile they are adding. Consequently, users can simply enter their username to display their Instagram profile on their WhatsApp account. This open-ended approach may raise concerns regarding privacy and potential identity theft, prompting speculation that WhatsApp may introduce an authentication step before fully launching this feature.
It is important to note that utilizing this feature will be optional, meaning iOS users can choose not to link their Instagram profiles if they prefer. A similar option is available to business account users on WhatsApp, though those users must log in to their Instagram accounts for verification of their profile links.
Currently, the integration appears to be limited to Instagram links, but it is anticipated that WhatsApp may broaden this to also permit the addition of links to other Meta-owned platforms such as Facebook and Threads. It remains uncertain whether the company will extend this function to include links to other social media sites like X (formerly Twitter) or Snapchat.
