WhatsApp is reportedly in the process of developing a new feature aimed at enhancing user control over unread message counts in its Android application. Currently under development, this feature may not yet be available to beta testers enrolled in the Google Play Beta Program.

According to a report from WABetaInfo, which tracks updates for WhatsApp, the company is experimenting with a functionality that would reset the unread message count whenever a user opens the app. While this feature has been identified in the beta version 2.24.11.13, it is not yet active, meaning some beta users might not see it after downloading the latest update. Once enabled, this feature should be found within the Notifications settings.

A screenshot provided by WABetaInfo reveals that a new option has been added to the Settings section under Notifications. This new feature, labeled Clear unread when app opens, appears between two existing options: one for enabling notification previews and another for displaying notifications for reactions. Described in the screenshot, this new setting states, “Your unread message count will be cleared every time the app opens.”

This potential feature could significantly benefit users who struggle with managing a large influx of messages. For example, individuals who receive 15-20 new messages daily may find it challenging to sift through all the notifications, especially if they do not require a response. Without opening these messages, the Chats icon remains cluttered with unread notifications, a common annoyance for those in active group chats as well.

While seeing a multitude of unread messages can create an untidy experience within the app, it’s promising that WhatsApp is taking steps to address this concern for its users. The report notes that once the setting is activated, the unread message count will reset to zero each time the app is launched, providing a more streamlined experience without the need to manually check each individual chat.
