WhatsApp is currently pilot testing a new feature that allows users to translate messages seamlessly within the latest beta version of its app for Android. A feature tracker has identified a new option in the settings, enabling on-device translation that takes place automatically. In line with its commitment to end-to-end encryption (E2EE), WhatsApp ensures that the translation process occurs directly on the user’s device, avoiding reliance on its servers. Users will be prompted to select and download specific language packs to utilize the translation functionality.

Automatic Translation with Offline Language Packs

With the update to WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.25.12.25, select beta testers now have access to the newly introduced ‘Translate Messages’ feature. This option can be activated via a toggle found under the Chat lock setting for each individual chat. According to findings shared by WABetaInfo, the development of this feature has been ongoing since July 2024 and is compatible with both chats and WhatsApp channels.

When the feature becomes widely available, users will need to enable the Translate messages toggle within chat settings for each conversation. Following activation, users will choose from a list of currently supported languages, including Spanish, Arabic, Portuguese (Brazil), Hindi, and Russian.

Once a language is selected, WhatsApp will download the corresponding language pack necessary for the translation function. This new capability allows for message processing offline, ensuring that all translation activities occur on the user’s device without utilizing Meta’s servers.

Additionally, users will have the option to enable automatic translation across all their WhatsApp chats or to translate specific messages by selecting a Translate option. The feature is set to be turned off by default, but users can easily manage language packs and disable it through the app’s settings.

This new translation feature follows the earlier introduction of voice note transcription within WhatsApp, which transcribes incoming audio messages. Similar to the translation functionality, users must download a language pack to their devices, with all transcriptions occurring on-device for enhanced privacy and security.
