WhatsApp is reportedly testing a new functionality that allows users to translate messages written in different languages, according to a feature tracker. This live translation capability is said to operate via on-device processing and might incorporate Google’s live translation technology. This information emerged from a beta version of the WhatsApp app for Android.
Live Translation of Messages on WhatsApp
WABetaInfo, a feature tracker, indicates that the live translation feature will function locally on users’ devices, meaning that data remains on the device instead of being transmitted to a cloud server. Users could potentially utilize this feature to translate messages directly within the instant messaging platform. This capability was observed in the WhatsApp for Android app version 2.24.15.8.
To access this feature, users might need to download specific language packs. Initially, it is expected to support English and Hindi, with plans to include additional languages in future updates. The feature tracker suggests that translations could occur automatically within chats, enabling seamless interactions without requiring users to leave the app to fetch translations.
The live transcription feature is currently still under development and is not yet accessible, even to beta testers. This means that those using the most recent version of WhatsApp for Android beta through the Google Play Beta program may not find this option available. Verification of its accessibility by the Gadgets 360 team yielded no positive results.
Voice Message Transcription
In addition to live message translation, WhatsApp for Android is also working on a live transcription feature for voice messages. This capability would allow users to create written transcriptions of voice messages they either send or receive. Reports suggest that a new banner may appear below voice messages, prompting users to request a transcription of the content.
This voice message transcription capability was identified in WhatsApp for Android beta app version 2.24.15.5 and is reportedly available to selective beta testers of the application.
