WhatsApp has previously introduced a feature that allows messages to disappear after a predetermined timeframe. In addition, users can send photos and videos that are designed to be viewed only once before being removed from the chat. This temporary media viewing option is currently accessible only to users on Android and iOS platforms. Although it was once available on desktop and Web versions, it was removed due to security concerns. Recently, reports indicate that the popular messaging service is planning to bring back the “View Once” functionality for both WhatsApp Web and desktop versions.

According to a report by WABetaInfo , WhatsApp is in the process of rolling out the view once feature for photos and videos on its Web and desktop platforms. A screenshot included in the report shows the button for activating the “view once” option located within the caption bar of the drawing editor on the WhatsApp for Windows application. Furthermore, the feature will be available for users on Windows, macOS, and linked devices such as iPads, and it is also being expanded to the WhatsApp Web platform.

The rollout for eligible users has begun, with some having already received the update over the past few weeks, according to the report. Users who do not yet see this option on their desktop or Web applications may soon have access to it, provided their applications are updated to the latest versions.

This move to reintroduce the feature on desktop and Web is reportedly the result of public feedback, despite its earlier removal due to security issues. Users indicated that the “view once” capability serves as a useful tool, allowing individuals to view multimedia files without consuming significant storage space on their devices.

In other updates, starting in December, WhatsApp backups on Android will remain functional as long as users have adequate cloud storage available on their Google accounts. Those who exceed their storage limits will need to clear space on Google Drive to continue backups. Users can also enable the “Disappearing Messages” feature to prevent chats from taking up storage.

Additionally, WhatsApp has introduced a service encouraging users to link their email addresses to their accounts. This email will not be visible to contacts but will serve as a secondary identifier for receiving verification codes and related communications.
