WhatsApp has begun the rollout of its application for Wear OS smartwatches, enabling users to utilize the widely-used messaging service directly from their wrist. The feature, which was first made available through the beta update channel, is now accessible to all users. The wearable version of WhatsApp includes support for several functions that facilitate quick message replies, eliminating the need to retrieve a smartphone. However, the company has not announced plans for a version compatible with watchOS, Apple’s smartwatch operating system.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg revealed the launch of Wear OS support for WhatsApp on Wednesday. To run the app on an Android smartwatch, the device must be powered by Wear OS 3. Users will have the ability to initiate chats with contacts, as well as to reply to messages using emojis, text, or voice. Additionally, calls can be received directly on the smartwatch, and users can view and respond to notifications while on the move via LTE.

This update follows earlier beta testing that began in May, and the stable version coincides with Samsung’s imminent Galaxy Unpacked event in South Korea. At this event, the tech giant is expected to introduce two new models: the Galaxy Watch 6 and Galaxy Watch 6 Classic, along with new foldable smartphones and an S-series tablet.

WhatsApp has yet to comment on the prospect of releasing a watchOS app for Apple Watch users, who currently have to rely on third-party applications that may carry privacy or security concerns. This is particularly noteworthy as Meta ceased support for its Messenger app on watchOS back in May.

To get started with WhatsApp on Wear OS, users must download version 2.23.14.81 on their smartwatch. After installation, it can be linked to the WhatsApp account on the user’s smartphone. This syncs recent conversations from the mobile device to the smartwatch. Just like its Android and iOS counterparts, the Wear OS app ensures that chats, voice messages, and other content remain protected with end-to-end encryption, ensuring that message contents are visible solely to the sender and recipient.
