WhatsApp has maintained its position as one of the leading instant messaging applications, allowing users to share images, videos, voice messages, contacts, locations, and documents with ease. However, a common complaint among users has been the application’s tendency to compress images, prompting many to seek alternative methods for sharing high-quality pictures. In a recent announcement, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg revealed that WhatsApp will now allow users to send HD images via chat.
Zuckerberg indicated in a Facebook update that the new feature is being gradually rolled out to all users. To share an HD image, users should look for the HD icon within a chat thread and select it before sending their picture.
This feature was initially tested in June on the beta channel and is designed to enhance the image quality shared between users. It’s important to note, however, that HD images will require more data and storage compared to standard images.
Steps to send HD images on WhatsApp
-
Open WhatsApp on your mobile device and choose a chat thread.
-
Select the attachment icon, which appears as a paperclip on Android devices and a ‘+’ symbol on iOS.
-
Choose the image you would like to share from your gallery.
-
Next, look for the HD icon located at the top of the screen, next to options such as rotate or crop.
-
Tap the HD button to select high-quality images and then press send.
By default, all images sent on WhatsApp are in standard quality, as the application compresses them to minimize file size. Users who prefer to send HD images will need to manually select the HD option each time. Recipients will notice the HD icon displayed at the bottom left corner of the image they receive.
