WhatsApp Boosts Delhi Metro Commute with Smart Card Top-Up

WhatsApp has introduced a new feature aimed at simplifying the commuting experience for users of the Metro in Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR). Through this update, WhatsApp users can now recharge their smart cards issued by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) using a specialized chatbot available on the messaging platform. In addition to recharge options, the chatbot provides services like purchasing tickets, reviewing past transactions, and accessing customer support. This initiative comes in the wake of DMRC’s collaboration with Airtel Payments Bank, which aims to enhance digital payment solutions for commuters.

Metro Recharge via WhatsApp

WhatsApp has stated that users can utilize the ticketing and chatbot services across both Android and iOS devices. The service is offered in English and Hindi. To begin, users can send a simple ‘Hi’ message to the DMRC’s designated number, +91 9650855800. Additionally, the DMRC chatbot can be located within the Payments section of WhatsApp under the Chat with businesses tab.

To initiate the smart card recharge, users must first select their language preference and then click on the Smart Card topUp option. The chatbot will guide users to a link that directs them to a payment gateway. Users can input their card number, choose the recharge amount, and proceed to make the payment.

According to the company, commuters can use various payment methods for topping up their smart cards on WhatsApp, including UPI and credit/debit cards. The top-up through UPI is free of additional charges, while debit card transactions incur a fee of 0.40 percent. Credit card transactions will have a charge of 1.10 percent. The payment services are facilitated by PeLocal.

WhatsApp has confirmed that the smart card recharge service is accessible for all routes within the Delhi and NCR region, including the Rapid Metro in Gurugram. This latest feature expands upon the QR code-based ticketing system that WhatsApp implemented for the Delhi Metro last year. Furthermore, other cities such as Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, Nagpur, and Pune have also started using WhatsApp for similar transport services.
