WhatsApp is reportedly working on a new feature for its Android application that will enable users to access media files marked as ‘View Once’ on linked devices. This development has been noted by a feature tracking outlet, indicating that the functionality may be included in a recent update for the WhatsApp beta version on Android, currently limited to beta testers.
A feature tracker known as WABetaInfo revealed that Meta Platforms’ messaging service is enhancing its capabilities to allow users to check View Once media on companion devices in a future app release. The beta version 2.25.3.7 of the WhatsApp app for Android is said to support this upcoming feature, which could also be available with certain prior beta updates.
Presently, users can only view media marked as View Once on their primary devices, with secondary devices lacking access. However, this may change soon. Screenshots shared by the publication suggest that the beta version could allow access to View Once media on various companion devices, such as smartphones and desktops. This enhancement is expected to offer improved convenience for users who frequently switch between multiple devices.
The View Once feature, designed for sharing photos and videos, was initially introduced in August 2021. It is represented by a “1” icon within the media sharing interface next to the caption text box. Media shared using this feature is programmed to disappear after being viewed or played a single time by the recipient.
WABetaInfo noted that this new functionality is still under development, with availability restricted to beta testers who are part of the Google Play Beta programme. Alongside this feature, WhatsApp is also believed to be working on a functionality that allows users to create and share events within individual chats on Android devices.
