WhatsApp has begun introducing a new feature for beta users on Android, allowing them to log into WhatsApp Web using their phone number. Traditionally, users have had to rely on scanning a QR code with their mobile device to access the web version of the messaging service. With the latest beta version of WhatsApp for Android, users can now choose to sign in via their mobile number, providing a practical alternative in cases where the phone’s camera is not operational. Additionally, WhatsApp is working on new filters for better chat organization within the beta version of the app.
This update was identified by WABetaInfo, who reported on version 2.23.14 of WhatsApp beta for Android. Users can locate the new functionality by tapping the three-dot menu in the upper right corner of the screen, selecting Linked devices > Link a device, and authenticating through their phone’s fingerprint scanner, PIN, or password. On the subsequent screen, users will encounter a QR code scanner alongside a new option at the bottom labeled Link with phone number instead.
By clicking this new button, users are directed to a screen asking them to access WhatsApp Web and select Link with phone number. After entering their mobile number, users will receive an 8-digit code that must be input into the WhatsApp app on their phone to finalize the linking process. Gadgets 360 has confirmed the functionality of this feature in the latest beta version of WhatsApp for Android.
It should be noted that the current version of WhatsApp beta for Android only allows phone number logins on the Web interface and does not extend this capability to WhatsApp Desktop or secondary mobile devices. There is no information yet regarding when this feature will be available for iOS or when it will be implemented for users on the stable Android update channel.
In related news, WABetaInfo has also detected a developing feature that will enable users to filter messages more easily. The navigation tabs have been repositioned to the bottom of the chat application, and new filters such as All, Unread, Personal, and Business have been introduced. These filters will help users categorize their chats based on whether they have been opened or remain unread, and will allow for easier access to WhatsApp Business chats by selecting one of the available filters.
