Nintendo recently provided Ars Technica and other media outlets with an exclusive preview of Mario Kart World, which is set to launch on June 5. In a livestreamed presentation, the company revealed additional details about this innovative addition to the franchise, designed specifically for the Nintendo Switch 2.

Mario Kart World distinguishes itself from its predecessors by offering players a “vast interconnected world” to explore between races. The open areas will be dotted with “hundreds of P-switches,” each activating missions aimed at enhancing driving skills. Players can also uncover hidden medallions, question-mark panels, and “drive-thru” food items that unlock new outfits.

As players navigate the expansive Mario Kart world, they will encounter new race courses inspired by the local environment and reimagined classic tracks from earlier games. In Grand Prix mode, the transitions between races will be incorporated into the traditional four-course cups. For example, after completing the Mario Kart Circuit in the Mushroom cup, players will subsequently drive from Mario Bros. Circuit to Crown City for the second race.

The Knockout Tour mode offers a unique racing experience, gradually eliminating participants from an initial 24 down to just four through a series of checkpoints woven throughout the courses. This mode allows for a fluid experience where tracks seamlessly connect along a predetermined route.

For those who prefer a classic racing format, Mario Kart World includes VS Mode, which allows for traditional three-lap races on singular courses. The battle mode will also make a return, featuring Balloon Battle, where competitors use weapons to eliminate each other, and Coin Runners, centered around collecting more coins than opponents.

The game supports online races with up to 24 players and provides local split-screen play for up to four players or up to eight players using local wireless connectivity across multiple systems, with a maximum of two players per system.

New Game Features

Mario Kart World introduces several exciting techniques for players. One of the standout features is the “Charge Jump,” activated by holding down the drift button while driving straight. This maneuver allows for a high jump that can help avoid hazards and even grant a speed boost on flat surfaces. Players can also use Charge Jumps to gain access to grindable rails and chain short wall rides together.

Nintendo also showcased a “Rewind” feature, permitting players to reverse time for a few seconds, allowing them to return to a prior position on the track. This could be beneficial for perfecting tricky jumps during free roam or practicing challenging shortcuts in races. However, while rewinding, other racers continue to advance, making strategic timing essential.

Additional intriguing details emerged during the presentation:

  • The character selection screen hinted at the return of lesser-known racers from the Mario franchise, including Sidestepper, Pianta, Cataquack, and Conkdor.
  • A new accessory, the “Joy-Con 2 Wheel,” will be available for purchase separately, resembling the Wii Wheel from Mario Kart Wii.
  • An “auto-use items” feature in the pause menu aims to assist younger players who may struggle with item management.
  • The optional Switch 2 camera can capture and center up to four local racers, showcasing their reactions live during gameplay.
  • Excitement also surrounded the new Kamek item, capable of transforming adversaries in unpredictable ways to create mayhem on the track.
  • Players will have the option to race courses in either day or night settings.
