The administration under former President Trump is in the process of developing an “AI.gov” website and an associated API aimed at fostering innovation within government through artificial intelligence. This information has come to light through 404 Media, which uncovered details from code available on GitHub along with an early iteration of the site.

The initiative seems to be orchestrated by the General Services Administration’s Technology Transformation Services, under the leadership of Thomas Shedd, a former engineer at Tesla. Shedd is recognized as a supporter of Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) and has publicly shared his vision for employing AI to combat fraud, scrutinize government contracts, and develop “AI coding agents” that could automate software development for federal entities, as per various reports.

The preliminary version of the AI.gov website identified by 404 Media (currently, the live link redirects to the White House site) outlines three key tools that embody the initiative, claiming to be “powered by the best in American AI.” These tools include an AI chat assistant, an API facilitating connections with models from OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic, and a console designed for agency-wide performance analysis. The site is anticipated to officially launch on July 4th, according to 404 Media.

The Department of Government Efficiency has been exploring the use of AI to take over tasks previously handled by thousands of displaced federal employees, as reported by Wired. Although Musk has distanced himself from government activities and engaged in public disagreements with the President, the AI.gov initiative indicates that the influence of DOGE may still persist.
