TikTok is reportedly in the process of developing a new version of its app specifically for users in the United States, in anticipation of a potential sale to a group of investors, according to a report by The Information on Sunday, which cited anonymous sources.

This development follows US President Donald Trump’s announcement on Friday that he plans to initiate discussions with China regarding a possible TikTok deal early next week.

Trump stated that the United States has “pretty much” reached an agreement concerning the sale of the popular short-video platform.

According to the report, TikTok aims to release this new app version on September 5, making it available in US app stores.

Previously, Trump extended the deadline for the Chinese company ByteDance, which owns TikTok, to divest its US assets until September 17.

The report also indicated that users will eventually need to download the new app to continue accessing TikTok, although the existing version will remain operational until March of the following year. It is important to note that this timeline may be subject to change.

TikTok has not yet provided a response to a request for comment from Reuters, and the news agency has been unable to independently verify the report.

Earlier this year, there were talks to separate TikTok’s US operations into a new American-based entity, which would be primarily owned and managed by US investors. However, those discussions were paused after China expressed its disapproval following Trump’s announcements of substantial tariffs on Chinese imports.

Trump remarked that any agreement would likely require approval from Chinese authorities.
