Threads, the social media platform developed by Meta to compete with Elon Musk’s X (formerly known as Twitter), is facing challenges in maintaining its user base following an initial surge post-launch. Recent reports indicate that Meta has experienced a drop of over 50% in its users within weeks of the platform’s introduction. In response, Meta has unveiled several new features for Threads this week, aimed at enhancing user engagement. Users will now be able to share posts directly through Instagram DMs, utilize custom alt-text for images and videos, and easily tag other accounts in their posts. Additionally, Meta is developing an early-stage desktop application, which is expected to be launched globally soon.
In an announcement via a Threads post on Wednesday, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg outlined three key updates for the app. Users can now share Threads posts not only as Instagram Stories but also directly through Instagram DMs.
Another notable addition is the ability for users to add alternative text to their photos and videos, allowing for personalized captions and descriptions based on individual preferences.
The final enhancement provides users with a straightforward way to mention other accounts in their Threads posts, a common feature across various social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, and X.
Instagram’s head, Adam Mosseri, also shared information regarding the updates on his account. Beyond the newly introduced features, Threads will now enable users to keep track of their liked threads and sort the accounts they follow through their profile settings.
Furthermore, Threads now supports rel=me links, facilitating user verification across platforms such as Mastodon. This enhancement allows users to link their Threads account on other services.
Launched on July 5 as Meta’s answer to Musk’s platform, Threads is currently accessible as a mobile app for both iOS and Android users. Zuckerberg also mentioned in a Threads post that a web version of the app is anticipated “in the next few weeks.” Mosseri confirmed the ongoing development of the desktop version, revealing that the company is working on an internal early version that will be available to users soon. As it strives to reclaim its audience, Meta is expected to introduce additional features to the platform.
