Threads is currently experimenting with a new feature that will enable users to communicate directly on the platform without leaving it. According to a company representative, direct messaging (DM) functionality is underway and will be rolled out in select markets beginning this week. This development marks a shift from previously stated plans by Instagram head Adam Mosseri, who had suggested a potential integration of Instagram’s DMs with Threads, including overlapping chat lists across both platforms under the Meta umbrella.

Testing DMs on Threads

In a recent update on Threads, Meta Platforms CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced, “We’re starting to test DMs on Threads. If you get access to this — slide through!” Following his announcement, Adam Mosseri noted that the rollout of direct messaging has been a “top request” since the platform’s inception.

Currently, users on the Meta-owned microblogging site lack the ability to send direct messages to one another. While sharing posts is possible, this action redirects through Instagram via a Send on Instagram option. The only means for interaction on Threads is through commenting on posts.

Reports from Technology News indicate that Threads will initiate the DM feature this week in markets including Hong Kong, Thailand, and Argentina, with further expansions planned for additional locations “soon.”

Users are anticipated to have access to a messaging inbox on Threads, distinct from Instagram’s DM interface. A newly introduced envelope icon will appear on the taskbar at the bottom of the screen in both the Android and iOS applications. Additionally, a similar DM icon is set to be integrated into the left panel on the desktop version of Threads.

“Our mission is to foster an open exchange of perspectives, and we know how important messaging is to supporting that cause,” Mosseri commented.

This update complements the advertising strategies unveiled last month by the company, which aim to assist businesses in broadening their outreach and engaging a larger audience. Advertisers will now have the opportunity to insert ad content between organic user posts in various formats. A floating action button (FAB) will also be introduced, directing viewers to brand websites for further information.
