Last week, Telegram introduced a significant update to its instant messaging app, enhancing its features for users. This new upgrade includes Chromecast support for Android devices, enabling users to easily cast videos from the platform to larger screens. Furthermore, several security-oriented features have been added to help users defend themselves against scams and spam. Additionally, Telegram is offering discounted verification services for businesses and startups through its verification platform.
New Features in Telegram Update
In a recent blog post, Telegram outlined the latest modifications as part of its regular monthly updates, which aim to enhance user experience. A significant focus of the update is Telegram Stars, a virtual currency that allows users to unlock content and services within mini apps or donate to other users. In India, the purchase of 100 Stars is priced at Rs. 199.
The most noteworthy addition is the Chromecast support for Android users. This feature allows users to cast videos directly to their Chromecast-enabled devices with just a couple of taps. To initiate the streaming process, users simply need to select a video, tap on the settings icon, and choose Chromecast from the options provided.
To further enhance user security, Telegram is rolling out a new information page feature aimed at combating scams. When a user receives a message from someone outside their contacts for the first time, the app will present an information page detailing the sender’s country (as indicated by their phone number), their sign-up date, the last time they updated their username and profile picture, shared groups, and whether the account is verified or official.
Telegram asserts that this page will be visible before any reply is made, empowering users to identify suspicious activities and potential scams effectively.
Moreover, the company is revising prices on its Verification Platform, known as Telegram Gateway. This authentication solution is designed for businesses and startups, allowing them to verify their customers’ phone numbers through the Telegram app.
Telegram Gateway is positioned as a cost-efficient and privacy-centric user authentication method, offering SMS authentication at a reduced rate of $0.01 (approximately Rs. 0.80) after a 20 percent discount. Businesses benefit from the option to set a maximum delivery timeframe for verification codes, with refunds offered if codes are not delivered within the designated window.
Additionally, Telegram is introducing features to help users who receive a large volume of incoming messages manage spam while also providing monetization opportunities. Users can now set fees for incoming messages from individuals not in their contacts, helping to filter out spam while potentially generating revenue.
The star system is also applicable to groups and channels, allowing group owners to maintain discussions on topic and monetize their efforts in community building.
