OpenAI’s latest AI-driven video app, Sora, has quickly surpassed 1 million downloads within just five days of its release. Bill Peebles, head of the Sora project, announced on Wednesday that the app achieved this milestone at a pace even quicker than that of ChatGPT during its initial launch, all while being available through an invite-only framework.
The Sora app made its debut on iOS on September 30, allowing users to browse a feed of AI-generated videos and create their own content using OpenAI’s new Sora 2 model. Among its features is the “cameos” function, which enables users to incorporate their own likeness or that of a friend into videos. Observations from industry insiders have noted that the app is filled with memes, creative deepfakes, and some unusual AI-generated content.
However, Sora has already faced criticism as users have started generating content that includes copyrighted characters in problematic contexts. This prompted OpenAI to enhance the control given to copyright holders over their intellectual property. Additionally, users can now define how their likenesses are utilized within the Sora platform.
Peebles stated, “The team is working hard to keep pace with this explosive growth. More features and improvements regarding overmoderation are in the pipeline!” As of now, Sora is exclusively available in the United States and Canada and is currently ranked at the top of the Apple App Store.
