Employees at the Montlake Laboratory in Seattle have reported that ecologists, chemists, and biologists are taking turns disposing of trash and are considering implementing a sign-up sheet for cleaning duties.
The scientists, who are involved in genetic sampling of endangered salmon to assess their population and survival rates, frequently handle chemicals that pose serious risks, including skin burns, fire hazards, and cancer. At least one scientist has indicated that the lack of hazardous waste disposal could lead to delays in critical research initiatives.
