Samsung has officially unveiled its second Unpacked event of the year, introducing the new Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Galaxy Z Flip 7. This event also marks the addition of a third foldable device to its lineup: the Galaxy Flip 7 FE, designed to be the entry-level option in Samsung’s foldable collection. Early impressions suggest that the FE resembles last year’s Flip 6, but more details will emerge as we test the device further. Notably, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Flip 7 are the first smartphones to launch globally with Android 16 pre-installed, alongside Samsung’s One UI 8.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7: Enhanced Slim Design and Functionality

The Galaxy Z Fold 7 presents a notable evolution, particularly for existing users of the Galaxy Z Fold 6. Its design features significant improvements that are immediately apparent. As the slimmest and lightest model in the Galaxy Z Fold series, the Fold 7 offers users an 8.9mm profile and a weight of only 215 grams, making it comfortable for one-handed use. This contrasts sharply with the previous Fold 6, which measured 12.1mm in thickness.

The cover display, now expanded to 6.5 inches with a 21:9 aspect ratio, provides a richer user experience than the 6.3-inch display of the Fold 6. Additionally, it boasts Corning Gorilla Glass Ceramic 2 for superior durability. The pixel density stands at 422 PPI with a remarkable 120Hz refresh rate, enhancing visual fluidity.

Switching to the main display, the Fold 7 features an 8-inch Dynamic AMOLED screen, offering 11% more area than its predecessor, peaking at 2600 nits of brightness. With a pixel density of 368 PPI and a 120Hz refresh rate, the newer model delivers a noticeably brighter and wider viewing experience, which will be explored further in an upcoming review.

The upgraded Armor FlexHinge has also been redesigned to be thinner and lighter, integrating a new multi-rail structure that aims to enhance durability. Samsung claims the use of Armor Aluminium for the frame increases hardness by 10%.

Under the hood, the Fold 7 is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite, the top chipset available in the Android market. With a focus on enhancing Galaxy AI features, the new foldable line promises improved performance, which will be assessed in a forthcoming detailed review.

Camera enhancements include a substantial upgrade to a 200-megapixel primary sensor compared to the 50-megapixel sensor on the Fold 6. The triple camera configuration maintains a 12-megapixel ultra-wide and a 10-megapixel telephoto sensor. Initial photographs appear promising, capturing vibrant colors and details, though a full judgment will be reserved for a comprehensive review.

The Galaxy Z Fold 7 will be offered in three configurations: 12GB RAM with either 256GB or 512GB of storage, and a 16GB RAM option with a 1TB capacity. The battery life remains unchanged at 4400mAh, with a 25W wired charging feature that promises 50% charging in 30 minutes. Additionally, the device has an IP48 rating, indicating water resistance, and it will be available in Blue Shadow, Silver Shadow, Jet Black, and an exclusive Mint color for Samsung.com customers.

In conclusion, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 stands out as a significant upgrade over the previous Fold 6 model.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7: Upgraded Cover Screen and Smart Features

The Galaxy Z Flip 7 has also received important enhancements, particularly regarding its cover screen. The new 4.1-inch AMOLED display is the largest ever featured on a Flip device, allowing for more functionality with Gemini support. This cover screen offers a remarkable peak brightness of 2600 nits and a 120Hz refresh rate, a clear upgrade from the Flip 6.

The main display has been upgraded to a 6.9-inch AMOLED screen with a pixel resolution of 1080×2520 and the same 120Hz refresh rate. With an increase in size, the cover screen now presents a brighter and sharper experience than its predecessor, which was limited to a 3.4-inch cover display and a 6.7-inch main screen. A deeper analysis of the screen quality will follow in the full review.

In terms of design, the Flip 7 presents a slimmer and more ergonomic profile, measuring 13.7mm in thickness, enhancing usability for one-handed interactions as well. The device is powered by the Exynos 2500 processor and comes in two configurations, each with 12GB of RAM—offered with either 256GB or 512GB of storage.

Although the camera specifications on the Flip 7 appear to mirror those of the Flip 6, the overall user interface continues to evolve, maintaining the familiar Samsung layout. Limited time with the device did not allow for extensive camera testing, hence a thorough performance evaluation will be provided in the formal review. Like the Fold 7, the Flip 7 also operates on One UI 8 with Android 16.

With a modest increase to a 4300mAh battery from the 4000mAh unit in the Flip 6, the wired charging support remains consistent at 25W. Ultimately, the Flip 7 presents essential improvements, particularly to its cover screen, which enhance its competitive stance in the marketplace.
