Sony is reportedly in the process of developing a Pro version of its PlayStation 5, marking a more powerful iteration of the current-generation console. Although the company has yet to officially confirm the PS5 Pro’s development, various credible leaks have provided insights into the anticipated enhancements.

Recently, leaked documents aiming at game developers indicate that Sony is encouraging a stronger emphasis on ray-tracing capabilities for games tailored to the PS5 Pro. According to these documents, which were acquired by Technology News, titles benefiting significantly from the console will potentially be labeled as “Trinity Enhanced” (PS5 Pro Enhanced).

The documents suggest that GPU performance on the PS5 Pro could be approximately 45 percent faster compared to the standard PS5. Codenamed “Trinity,” this new model is anticipated to utilize a “more powerful ray tracing architecture,” offering speeds up to three times that of the original PS5. Reports indicate that Sony plans to keep the regular PS5 available alongside this Pro variant, with new games expected to be compatible with both systems. Additionally, older titles may receive updates to enhance their performance to align with the PS5 Pro’s capabilities.

In addition to the specifications shared in the documents, Technology News’s report referenced sources linked to Sony’s strategic plans. It was noted that Sony has started urging developers to ensure their upcoming games feature compatibility with the PS5 Pro, placing particular emphasis on ray-tracing advancements. The firm anticipates that all games submitted for certification in August will be optimized for the PS5 Pro. Moreover, developers reportedly have the option to obtain test kits for the new console.

According to earlier reports by Insider Gaming, the PS5 Pro will use the same eight-core AMD Zen 2 CPU found in the standard model, but with a high-frequency mode aiming for clock speeds up to 3.85GHz. Developers will have the flexibility to select between a standard operating mode of 3.5GHz and the higher frequency option. Enhancements to system memory are also on the agenda for the upcoming console.

Prior leaks have hinted that the PS5 Pro could feature up to three times the computational abilities of the original PS5, boasting 33.5 teraflops of single-precision compute power compared to the 10.28 teraflops of its predecessor.

The Pro variant of the PlayStation 5 is expected to launch later this year, likely timed for the holiday shopping season to drive sales. This development follows the recent release of the slim version of the PS5, which includes a detachable disc drive, in India earlier this month.
