Sony has reported that the pricing structure of the recently introduced PlayStation 5 Pro has not adversely affected its console sales. Although the company has not disclosed specific sales figures for the PS5 Pro, it anticipates that the console’s performance will not significantly impact overall PS5 sales, as it is positioned as a high-end option for dedicated gamers. The PS5 Pro was launched in select markets on November 7 with a price tag of $699.99.

PS5 Pro Price and Sales Outlook

The statements were made by Sony president Hiroki Totoki during the company’s second quarter FY 2024 earnings call on Friday. Responding to an inquiry regarding the PS5 Pro’s pricing, Totoki noted that the unit sales for the PS5 Pro were included in the projections for the overall PS5 sales for the current financial year. The company expects to sell 18 million units of the PS5 in FY 2024.

“The PS5 Pro is considered high-end, targeting hardcore users. Thus, we do not expect a significant contribution to overall sales,” Totoki explained during the earnings call. He also expressed confidence in the console’s strength compared to the standard PS5.

“Regarding the pricing, there have been various opinions expressed, but I believe the PS5 Pro pricing has not led to negative consequences for sales,” he stated.

Overview of the PS5 Pro Launch

The PS5 Pro, which was initially unveiled in September, officially launched last week in selected markets including the United States, United Kingdom, European Union, and Japan. The console has faced some backlash over its steep price—the PS5 Pro is priced at $699.99 in the US (approximately Rs. 58,750). In the UK, it retails for GBP 699.99, and in the EU and Japan, it is priced at EUR 799.99 and JPY 119,980 (tax included), respectively.

Despite its elevated cost, the PS5 Pro does not include a disc drive by default. Consumers looking to play physical games or movies must purchase an optional attachable disc drive for an additional $79.99, which further increases the total cost of the console.

During the same call, Sony confirmed that the PS5 Pro has not been launched in India due to the government’s telecom regulations. The new console is compatible with Wi-Fi 7 (IEEE 802.11be), which operates on the 6GHz spectrum—currently unallocated in India.
