Sony has announced a $50 price increase for all PlayStation 5 slim models in the United States, effective August 21st. The new prices for the PS5 Digital Edition, the standard PS5, and the PS5 Pro will be $499.99, $549.99, and $749.99, respectively. Consumers looking to avoid these higher prices can still purchase the consoles from retailers like Amazon, Best Buy, Target, and Walmart today.
Currently, the disc-based PS5 is sold out on Amazon, and availability may dwindle further as time passes. At present, the PS5 Digital Edition can be found for approximately $449 at Amazon, Best Buy, Walmart, and Target. Meanwhile, the standard PS5 is available for around $499 at Best Buy, Walmart, and Target. The PS5 Pro can also be found for about $699 at Amazon, Best Buy, Walmart, and Target.
All three iterations of the PS5 can access the same game library, though they feature minor differences. The PS5 Digital Edition includes repositioned ports and omits a disc drive, which permits it to play only downloaded games from the PlayStation Store. Sony offers an optional external disc drive for those interested in playing physical games or Blu-rays, priced at $79.99. In contrast, the standard PS5 possesses the same specs but comes with an internal disc drive.
Meanwhile, the PS5 Pro is equipped with enhanced graphics capabilities, faster memory, advanced ray tracing, Wi-Fi 7 support, and AI-based upscaling. While it does not feature an internal disc drive, it can utilize the external disc drive designed for the original PS5. Furthermore, it boasts 2TB of internal storage, double the capacity found in the non-Pro versions, providing ample room for digital games. Although the PS5 Pro does not have unique titles, some existing PS5 games have received graphical enhancements for the system.
The price increase from Sony follows a similar $30 hike on original Nintendo Switch models, announced just weeks earlier. Additionally, Nintendo recently adjusted prices on some Nintendo Switch 2 accessories, but Sony maintains that the suggested retail prices for PS5 accessories will remain unchanged. The price adjustments by both companies are attributed to fluctuating tariffs on international goods, which have been influenced by ongoing policy changes initiated by President Donald Trump.
