On Wednesday, Sony unveiled a new update for participants in the PS5 beta program. The latest beta introduces features including support for personalized 3D audio profiles tailored to headphones and earbuds, the option to limit Remote Play access for specific users, and adaptive charging capabilities for DualSense controllers on the newest PS5 slim model. Eligible users began receiving access to the beta on Thursday, with a broader global rollout expected in the upcoming months.
Participants selected for the beta will receive an email invitation on Thursday, indicating when the update can be downloaded. This version of the update will be available to users in the United States, Canada, Japan, the United Kingdom, Germany, and France. While Sony plans to implement a global release later, the company has noted that some features in the beta may be altered or omitted in the final version.
The update allows users on all models of the PS5 to craft a customized 3D audio profile. The PS5 already supports 3D audio, and with this update, users will be able to create personalized profiles for compatible headphones and earbuds, such as Sony’s Pulse Elite wireless headset and Pulse Explore wireless earbuds. This new functionality enables users to conduct sound quality assessments to identify the profile that best matches their preferences.
Highlighting New PS5 Beta Features
According to the announcement on the PlayStation Blog, “For example, your personalized 3D audio profile may enable you to better sense the positions of characters and objects in a game world more clearly than before, making the experience more immersive.” Users can locate the 3D audio profile feature within the Sound section of the PS5 Settings menu.
Additionally, the update introduces a function that lets users adjust Remote Play settings for individual accounts. PS5 owners will now have the capability to revoke Remote Play access for other users logged into their console using their PSN accounts. To utilize this feature, users can navigate through Settings > System > Remote Play > Enable Remote Play to select the user they wish to manage access for.
Lastly, the beta introduces adaptive charging for a variety of controllers, including the DualSense wireless controller, DualSense Edge wireless controller, PlayStation VR2 Sense controllers, and Access controller, for users with the PS5 slim model. This feature operates when the PS5 is in rest mode and the controller is connected via a USB Type-C cable. Sony states that adaptive charging optimizes power consumption by varying the duration that the controller remains charged based on its battery status.
Users can access this feature by going to Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode and selecting Supply Power to USB Ports > Adaptive.
