The Google Pixel 10 series is reportedly in the works, poised to succeed the previous year’s Pixel 9 lineup. Ahead of its expected launch, new insights suggest that Google may incorporate a graphics processing unit (GPU) crafted by Imagination Technologies, a UK-based firm, into the upcoming Tensor G5 system on a chip (SoC) for these devices. The GPU in question is expected to be the DXT-48-1536, which boasts features like scalable ray tracing, RISC-V firmware compatibility, and 2D dual-rate texturing.

Details on the Pixel 10 Series GPU

An article from Android Authority reveals that Yang Yanling, a postgraduate student, recently published a blog post discussing the integration of RISC-V technologies with Imagination’s GPU intellectual property following the RISC-V Day event held in Tokyo last month. The original, unedited blog included mentions of processors utilizing Imagination GPUs, including the Tensor G5 currently being developed.

Imagination Technologies has shared the blog post, though it has since been updated to exclude specific references to the Tensor G5. Nonetheless, screenshots imply that the company is likely to integrate the DXT-48-1536 GPU. Designed for high-end devices, this GPU can provide ray tracing functionality across multiple configurations and performance settings through its ray acceleration cluster (RAC).

Furthermore, the DXT-48-1536 enhances graphics performance while maintaining visual quality, thanks to its Fragment Shading Rate (FSR) technology. This feature reduces the number of fragments processed, thereby optimizing the efficiency of ray-traced effects. The GPU is also reported to offer a 50% increase in peak compute and texture performance per Scalable Processing Unit (SPU) in comparison to its predecessor, suggesting a potential boost in graphical fidelity for the upcoming Google Pixel 10 series.

Previous reports have indicated that the Tensor G5 SoC is set to feature notable upgrades, including enhancements to the always-on compute (AoC) audio processor, the Google Emerald Hill memory coprocessor, the Google GXP digital signal processor (DSP), and the Google EdgeTPU. It is anticipated that this new chip will be fabricated using TSMC’s advanced 3nm process technology, marking a shift from Samsung Foundry and offering improvements in both performance and energy efficiency over the current Tensor G4 chip found in the Pixel 9 series.
