Perplexity has unveiled an upcoming web browser featuring artificial intelligence capabilities, named Comet. This announcement was made on Monday, introducing a key feature known as agentic search. While the AI company has not disclosed a specific launch date, it has initiated a sign-up waitlist for those interested, suggesting that registered users will receive updates closer to the launch date. Earlier this month, Perplexity also introduced a new Deep Research capability, which enables users to gather extensive reports on intricate subjects using a method called test-time compute.
Perplexity Unveils Comet Web Browser
In a social media post on X (previously known as Twitter), Perplexity’s official account shared a brief teaser video for the forthcoming browser. The seven-second clip showcases an animated logo for Comet, but offers no substantial details regarding its features. The company highlighted the term “agentic search” in relation to the browser, though specifics about its functionalities remain unclear.
A dedicated microsite for Comet has also been launched, currently allowing users to register for the waitlist. Expectations suggest that Perplexity will provide further information about the browser as the launch approaches. Those who sign up may also receive early access to the new tool.
The mention of agentic search indicates that the browser will likely include built-in AI agents capable of executing tasks on the user’s behalf. Although specific applications have not been detailed, similar functionalities are evident in OpenAI’s Operator AI agent, which can manage online bookings, make restaurant reservations, and facilitate purchases on e-commerce sites.
Moreover, Perplexity is actively seeking individuals to assist in the development of Comet. The company has several job openings, including a particular position for a “Browser C++ Engineer.” The job posting states, “Perplexity AI is looking for an experienced C++ Chromium Engineer to join our small team that is revolutionizing the way people browse the Internet. You will be responsible for building and expanding Comet – Perplexity’s new browser.”
This role emphasizes that the new browser will be based on Chromium, which is an open-source project developed and maintained by Google, for both desktop and mobile platforms.
