Perplexity, a startup known for its AI-powered answer engine, has introduced a new web browser named Comet. According to CEO Aravind Srinivas, the browser integrates Perplexity’s AI search capabilities to create a streamlined browsing experience that enables uninterrupted interactions.
Initially, Comet will be accessible exclusively to users subscribed to the Perplexity Max plan, which costs $200 per month, before expanding to a wider audience through an invite system. The browser utilizes Perplexity’s search engine, providing AI-generated answers to user inquiries based on various online sources. It also includes features that allow users to make purchases and book accommodations on their behalf.
The launch of this AI-driven browser comes amid Perplexity’s efforts to compete against Google’s stronghold in the search market. Earlier this year, the company collaborated with Motorola to have its assistant pre-installed on new Razr smartphones. Srinivas noted to Technology News in April that this partnership was facilitated in part due to Google’s recent antitrust challenges, which he believes hindered the tech giant’s ability to exert pressure on original equipment manufacturers.
Comet operates on Chromium, the open-source framework developed with Google’s backing that supports leading browsers such as Chrome and Microsoft Edge. Perplexity has voiced interest in acquiring Chrome should the courts compel Google to divest the browser.
Srinvas mentioned in April that launching a browser could be the most effective means of creating intelligent agents. In addition to its integration with Perplexity’s search, Comet features a built-in AI assistant designed to respond to user inquiries regarding current on-screen content, akin to the Gemini integration seen in Google Chrome.
The AI assistant featured in Comet resides in the browser’s sidebar, capable of summarizing or clarifying text, in addition to executing tasks such as scheduling appointments, sending emails, or making purchases. Srinivas has indicated that Perplexity intends to regularly introduce new features and updates for Comet moving forward.
Currently, the browser is available solely for Windows and Mac users and allows for quick importing of extensions, settings, and bookmarks with a single click.
