The newly unveiled Find X8 Ultra from Oppo marks the latest development in the fierce rivalry among Oppo, Xiaomi, and Vivo to create the leading smartphone for photography. However, Oppo has taken a different approach this time, suggesting that a more compact design might be the key.
Although the Find X8 Ultra features a sizable 6.82-inch display and weighs 7.97 ounces, it is notably slimmer at 8.78mm compared to its competitors, the Xiaomi 15 Ultra and Vivo X100 Ultra. There’s anticipation surrounding the upcoming X200 Ultra, but initial hints suggest it may not offer significant improvements in thickness.
These devices are part of a new category of oversized Chinese camera phones characterized by substantial batteries and expansive camera modules equipped with numerous lenses and sensors. Oppo appears to be setting a standard for a more manageable size, as product specialist Jeff Jiang expressed the company’s aim to deliver a “relatively normal phone” without sacrificing camera quality.
The Find X8 Ultra is outfitted with four 50-megapixel cameras, fine-tuned in collaboration with Hasselblad, including advanced 3x and 6x periscope lenses featuring quicker apertures. Equipped with a tactile shutter button and customizable zoom controls, the device also introduces a new shortcut button that takes the place of the familiar alert slider.
Notably, the X8 Ultra incorporates a massive 6,100mAh battery which outpaces the competition, supporting 100W wired and 50W wireless charging. Powering the device is the Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset, complemented by options of up to 16GB of RAM and 1TB of storage. Additionally, it boasts IP68 and IP69 ratings, ensuring resilience against dust and water damage.
Alongside the Find X8 Ultra, Oppo also introduced the Find X8s and X8s Plus, which are iterations of the Find X8 powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 9400 Plus. The X8s features a more compact 6.3-inch display, while the X8s Plus steps up with a larger 6.59-inch screen and a substantial 6,000mAh battery. Unfortunately, Oppo has confirmed that none of these new models will be available outside of China.
