On Friday, OpenAI initiated the rollout of its artificial intelligence (AI) agent, Operator, across multiple countries. Previously accessible only in preview for ChatGPT Pro users in the United States since its introduction in January, Operator is designed to function as a versatile AI tool that autonomously undertakes online tasks based on user prompts. However, the AI agent will not be available in European nations at this time.
OpenAI’s Operator AI Agent Finally Rollout
In a statement on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), OpenAI confirmed the expansion of Operator’s availability. Users in Australia, Brazil, Canada, India, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, and the United Kingdom, among other locations where ChatGPT is offered, can now access the AI agent. The tool has already been made available to users in the US.
However, European users will have to wait a bit longer, as OpenAI indicated that efforts are ongoing to make Operator accessible in the EU, Switzerland, Norway, Liechtenstein, and Iceland.
Upon its launch, OpenAI described Operator as being powered by the Computer-Using Agent (CUA). This specialized AI model leverages computer vision capabilities alongside advanced reasoning abilities derived from an unspecified OpenAI model, potentially the o3 model. The AI agent underwent post-training via reinforcement learning.
The CUA possesses the ability to interact with graphical user interfaces (GUIs), which include various elements like buttons, menus, and text fields displayed on the users’ screens. Additionally, it features a dedicated browser that allows it to perform actions in a controlled environment, enabling users to focus on other tasks simultaneously.
Operator is capable of accepting both text and image inputs. While completing assignments, it analyzes raw pixel data displayed on the screen and executes actions through a virtual keyboard and mouse that operate within a sandbox environment. The AI agent is designed to handle complex multi-step tasks, maneuver through errors, and adjust to unforeseen challenges.
